About the artist:
Eleanor Allitt is an English painter/illustrator and storyteller. She originally trained as a textile designer, then went on to study fine art with the artists Edward Bawden and Cecil Collings. She has held one-man shows and had work accepted at many galleries including the Royal Academy and the Royal Watercolour Society. In recent years, she became interested in myth, in particular ancient Sumerian myth, which resulted in the publication of a picture book about Inanna and her descent into the underworld.

About this work:
The artist was deeeply moved by the story of Inanna and went to the British Museum to find out more about this intriguing woman. She was inspired by the integrity of the artefcts excavated in present-day Iraq and dating from 2,500 years ago. She wanted to use this strength in her work and show how the ancient myth is relevant today. ‘Acrylic paint provided me with a medium that is both adaptable to many different techniques and receptive to a spontaneous approach which is very fitting for the way in which I work.’
