The Poor Citizen of Nippur

This story tells how a poor man gets even with a greedy mayor who tricks him. The mayor tricks Gimil-Ninurta once. He tricks the mayor not once, not twice but three times. Versions of this story survived by word of mouth after cuneiform script ceased to be used and spread far beyond Mesopotamia.
