The Matter of Aratta

This oldest Mesopotamian story was written in Sumerian. It tells of the rivalry between Enmerkar, the king of Unug, and the Lord of Aratta. Enmerkar is challenged as the chosen one of the goddess Inanna then meets a sequence of challenges from Aratta. In the course of the competition he sends Aratta the first ever diplomatic letter and mutually beneficial trade begins, as willed by Inanna.
