The Story Museum, Oxford

The Story Museum in Oxford continued its “1001” search to choose the stories it will curate, with an event devoted to the Mesopotamian story of Gilgamesh.

ZIPANG storyteller Fran Hazelton read extracts from her retelling of the Gilgamesh story in the Enheduanna Society book Three Kings of Warka.

The event was hosted by Michael Rosen, author, broadcaster, former Children’s Laureate and now Curator of Stories at the Story Museum.

Dr Irving Finkel from the British Museum showed the audience a cuneiform clay tablet and talked about the discovery of the Mesopotamian flood story in the ruins of King Ashurbanipal’s library in Nineveh and its translation by archaeologist and philologist George Smith.

Michael Rosen and Dr Irving Finkel are patrons of the Enheduanna Society, as are Dr Stephanie Dalley and Dr Fran Reynolds, both of whom attended the event.
